Hello Craftaholics! As you may have noticed, we have a great passion for origami projects. There is something inherently relaxing about the process of creating origami crafts. However, we have realized that we have not yet made any origami doves, which are a beautiful symbol of peace and love. So, today, we will dive into the creation of these wonderful origami birds.

These paper doves are very easy to make, yet they can be an appropriate craft to make during many occasions, including upcoming fathers and mothers day as they represent love and compassion. Also, origami doves would be a perfect school project on days of peace and friendship. You can teach your kids how to make them so they can give them away as a token of friendship.

All you need for this craft is a piece of square sheet. You can craft up to 4 origami doves from an A4 size sheet; which means the cost of this craft is less than a dollar and takes up only a few minutes.

Tools

No tools are required to make these adorable origami birds, but you may use a pencil, ruler, and a pair of scissors to measure and cut out a square sheet; or want to add a little design to the origami dove using coloring pencils or sharpies.

Materials

  1. A square sheet of paper.

Step-by-Step Instructions to Make Origami Dove

Step 1: Base Half-Folding

Take or prepare a piece of square sheet. We prepared a square sheet from a regular A4 size white sheet.

Fold the square paper into half, diagonally.

Step 1: Base Half-Folding

Step 2: Base Flap-Folding

Fold it into half diagonally again (fold the long side of the triangle paper into half).

Now that the pattern has 2 triangle flaps, hold the top flap and fold it in half, outwards.

Step 2: Base Flap-Folding

Step 3: Base Flap-Folding

Turn the current pattern to the other side.

Now, fold the flap of that side into half as well.

Step 3: Base Flap-Folding

Step 4: Fold the Current Pattern in Half

Fold the current pattern into half by joining the top corner with the bottom side.

Unfold the last fold, this will leave a crease.

Step 4: Fold the Current Pattern in Half

Step 5: Unfold the Top Flap

Unfold the flap of the side you’re working on. Notice the 90-degree crease lines.

Fold the paper along the horizontal crease and flatten it with the pattern.

Step 5: Unfold the Top Flap

Step 6: Base Creases/ Folding

Fold in the middle line (diagonal crease between the 90-degree crease lines).

Now fold and flatten the vertical crease with the main pattern.

Step 6: Base Creases/ Folding

Step 7: Base Creases/ Folding

Turn the current pattern to the other side and fold the flap as we did in the previous step. The pattern should now have 3 flaps.

Fold down any one of the top flaps along the diagonal crease on that side.

Step 7: Base Creases/ Folding

Step 8: Base Creases/ Folding

Turn the pattern and fold out the other flap. These flaps are the wings of our origami dove.

Rotate the pattern to 180 degrees, or bring the wings to the top.

Step 8: Base Creases/ Folding

Step 9: Base Creases/ Folding

Notice that the wing has 2 triangle parts on both sides; we’ll work on the bigger triangle (which is going to be the tail feather of the origami dove). Fold the bigger triangle part along the orange-marked crease in step 8.

Fold the longer side of the folded part and align it with the outer edge.

Step 9: Base Creases/ Folding

Step 10: Base Creases/ Folding

Unfold the last 2 folds, they should leave creases.

Keep the top crease on top and fold the tail part along the side creases of the top middle crease.

Step 10: Base Creases/ Folding

 Step 11: Base Creases/ Folding

This is what the tail part should look like in this step.

Flatten the tail pattern with the main origami pattern.

Step 11: Base Creases/ Folding

Step 12: Base Creases/ Folding

Fold the other end of the current pattern in 1/3 from the outside. This will be the front side (beak) of the origami dove.

Unfold the last fold.

Step 12: Base Creases/ Folding

Step 13: Base Creases/ Folding

Open the bottom side. Fold the top-middle crease inside to form the beak of the origami dove and then flatten the front with the main pattern.

You can use a marker to draw the eyes of the dove.

Step 13: Base Creases/ Folding
