2 Easy Ways to Fold Cute Origami Cats (+ Video Tutorial)
Learn how to make origami cats in 2 different ways. Both are super cute and really simple to make, plus we have added video tutorials at the end. So, even if you are an absolute beginner, you can make them without much hassle.
I have loved making origami crafts and making origami for as long as I can remember. TBH, making origami is kind of like therapy to me; it gives me peace. If you are someone like me who also likes to make origami crafts then this tutorial article is for you.
In this article, we’re sharing a single-sheet origami cat and a double-sheet origami cat pattern. Both crafts are somewhat beginner-friendly but not difficult. Adding a pair of googly eyes makes these 2 origami cat patterns look even cuter!
These are some great paper projects to engage the kids and allow them to have a little quality-crafty time. And do we need any special occasion to craft some cute origami ctas? Of course not!
Both of these crafts are budget-friendly, require fewer supplies, and 10 to 15 minutes only. If you have 3 square sheets at home, you can try both styles; and it won’t even cost you a dollar.

How to Make Origami Cats
Tutorial 1: Folding Origami Cat from a Single Sheet
Step 1: Base Folds
Take a piece of a square sheet (10cm x 10cm) fold it in half vertically and horizontally and then unfold.
Fold any one side of the square sheet along its parallel middle crease. Similarly, fold and join the opposite side along the same middle crease.
Step 2: Folding the Ear Parts
Fold the top right corner inside, aligning it with the middle crease. Unfold that corner.
Open the corner along the 2 crease lines, fold, and flatten the corner inwards.
Step 3: Forming the Ears
Similarly, fold the left side of the origami pattern. Notice the square part formed by the 2 flattened corners. Fold the top corner inside and join it with the center of the square.
Fold out the right bottom flap to 60 degrees. This should form the right ear. Similarly, fold out the left ear.
Step 4: Folding the Head Part
Fold the left and right corners along the base middle crease and then unfold.
Fold the last crease inwards and fold out the base middle crease. Flatten the intact side of the base middle crease.
Step 5: Folding the Bottom Part
Hold the intact part (body part of the origami cat) of the current origami pattern and fold it in the opposite direction.
Fold in the bottom (closed) left and right corners by 1 cm. Unfold the corners.
Step 6: Adjusting the Neck Part
Slightly open the right bottom part and fold the corner inwards along the creases. Flatten the right side neatly.
Similarly, fold the left corner inside. Fold the intact part (body part) to its initial side.
Step 7: Working on the Body Part
Flatten the body part neatly. Fold the right side of the body part along the base middle crease.
Similarly, fold the left side of the body part along the base middle crease. Fold any one of the bottom corners inside by 1 cm.
Step 8: Working on the Body Part
Fold the bottom side along the inner edge of the folded corner. Unfold the last 4 folds.
Fold the current pattern along the bottom crease (created in the previous step). Fold the right side along its initial crease.
Step 9: Forming the Tail
Fold the left crease along its initial crease but fold out the bottom corner along its diagonal creases. Flatten the corner (this should be outside the pattern).
Fold the extra part on the bottom-left side towards the open side. Flatten that part (this is the tail). Turn the origami cat to the other side.
Step 10: Adding Details with markers
Use Sharpies or markers to add spots, blush, whiskers, and eyes to the origami cat. And done!
Video Tutorial: How to Make an Origami Cat out of a Single Sheet
We know sometimes it’s hard to follow the steps from written tutorials. That’s why we have created 2 video tutorials. Here is the video tutorial on making origami cats from single sheet of paper.
Tutorial 2: Folding Origami Cat from Double Ssheets
Step 1: Base Folds
Prepare 2 square sheets of the same size. take any one of the square sheets and fold it in half diagonally.
Step 2: Forming the Right Ear
Hold any one of the closed corners and bring it to the open corner (covering half of the open corner). Fold out the right triangle flap by half or slightly less than half to form a triangular ear on the right side.
Step 3: Forming the Left Ear
Similarly, fold the left ear. Fold the top corner in half, between the ears.
Step 4: Forming the Head
Fold the left and right corners inside. Fold the bottom corner inside by 1 cm.
Step 5: Moving to the Body Part
Unfold the bottom side and fold the top layer inwards. Take the other square sheet and fold it in half diagonally and then unfold it.
Step 6: Forming the Body Part
Fold both sides of the half crease along the crease. Fold the current pattern in half symmetrically, along the half crease.
Step 7: Working on the Body Part
Fold the narrow end of the current pattern as shown in this picture. Notice the inner edge of the folded part; fold the current pattern along the inner edge.
Step 8: Forming the Tail
After folding the pattern along the inner edge, place and flatten the pattern on a flat surface. Unfold the last 2 folds.
Step 9: Forming the Tail (2)
Keeping the wide side of the current origami pattern flattened, open the narrow side along the diagonal creases. Flatten the narrow end on the top surface of the origami pattern.
Step 10: Forming the Tail and Body Part
Fold up the diamond-like part upwards, along its eft and right corners. Fold that part in half along the middle crease (this is the tail).
Step 11: Adding Details
Use sharpies or markers to add spots, blush, whiskers, and eyes to the origami cat. And done!
Step 12: Attaching the Head and Body
Use glue to attach the head and body parts together to complete the origami cat figure.
Tips for Beginners:
- Use medium-light origami paper or regular craft paper for these origami cats.
- Follow the base creases and folds properly for a neat pattern.
- Prepare the square paper as neatly as possible. Use a ruler and a pencil to trace a perfect square shape if necessary.
- If this is your first attempt, you might need to try a few times before crafting the pattern perfectly, that is absolutely fine!
- You can use Sharpies to add faces to the origami cat patterns to give them a cute look.
