Video with Step-by-Step Break-Down (Instructions)

Folding this origami Easter egg is surprisingly simple and so satisfying! I recommend watching the Origami Easter Egg making video from start to finish first—then follow the step-by-step tutorial to recreate it with ease. 🐣

Origami Egg Steps 1 - Easy Origami Easter Egg Tutorial (Video & Step-by-Step Breakdown)

Prepare a square paper (15cm x 15cm). Fold the square paper in half diagonally and then unfold. Fold the square paper in half diagonally along the opposite side and unfold again. We have diagonal-base creases.

Step 2: Diagonal Side Folds

Origami Egg Steps 2 - Easy Origami Easter Egg Tutorial (Video & Step-by-Step Breakdown)

Hold any one corner of the square paper and bring it to the center of the square (the interaction point of the diagonal base creases). Hold the opposite corner and fold it to the opposite side. Flatten the folds neatly.

Step 3: Symmetrical Side Folds

Origami Egg Steps 3 - Easy Origami Easter Egg Tutorial (Video & Step-by-Step Breakdown)

Hold the bottom-right side of the current pattern (wide side) and fold it along the middle crease (to 90 degrees). Similarly, fold the left side of the current pattern. This will form a heart shape.

Step 4: Turn and Fold the Bottom

Origami Egg Steps 4 - Easy Origami Easter Egg Tutorial (Video & Step-by-Step Breakdown)

Turn the current origami pattern to the other side. Fold the bottom corner of the heart shape by a cm.

Step 5: Forming the Top Part of the Egg

Fold the left and right side of the current pattern by a cm or 2; but not more than that. Follow the pictures of this step. Turn the current pattern to the other side. This is the Top side of the cracked origami egg.

Step 6: Forming the Egg Base

Take another 15cm x 15cm paper of the same color. You can use a different colored paper if you want to. Make the diagonal half creases and then join a corner to the center of the square.

Step 7: Second Part of Base Creases

Unfold the last fold. Now hold the opposite corner and join it to the intersection of the last fold and the half-diagonal base fold.

Step 9: Fold the Sides

Origami Egg Steps 9 1 - Easy Origami Easter Egg Tutorial (Video & Step-by-Step Breakdown)

Turn the pattern to the other side. Fold the right and left corners along the adjacent creases on each side.

Step 10: Fold the Bottom Sides

Make thin folds on the bottom sides of the right and left folds. Turn the pattern to the other side. This is the front side of the origami egg base.

Step 11: Decorate the Origami Egg

You can use Sharpies or paper cutouts to decorate the origami egg part. We added round paper cutouts to decorate the origami egg parts. You can insert the small origami egg part through the top side of the origami egg base to complete the egg shape.

You can insert a card or a flat origami craft (we added an origami chick) or flat candies inside the pocket of the origami egg base and then cover it with the top part.

Origami Easter Egg Not Turning Out Right?
These Tips Might Help!

If your origami egg doesn’t look quite right, or something feels off—don’t worry! Let’s walk through some of the most common blunders and how to fix them:

1. Lost track of the steps?
👉 Tip: Pause and replay the Origami Easter Egg making video.
Check which step you’re closest to. Many folds build off previous creases, so backtrack slightly and refold from there. Step 2 and Step 3 are especially easy to get flipped around if you miss the center point or the direction of the folds.

2. Your egg doesn’t look heart-shaped in Step 3?
👉 Tip: Make sure your diagonal creases from Step 1 are clear and precise.
These base folds act like your guide. If they’re off even a little, the side folds won’t meet at the center and the heart shape won’t form correctly.

3. The folds in Step 5 feel bulky or uneven?
👉 Tip: Fold gently and only a centimeter in on each side.
Use thin paper or origami paper. If your paper is too thick or the folds are too deep, it will create unnecessary bulk at the top of the egg.

4. The bottom part (Step 6–10) doesn’t align with the top?
👉 Tip: Make sure both squares are the same size (15cm x 15cm), and fold precisely along the base creases.
In Step 7, many people misplace the fold intersection—line it up exactly with the corner-to-center line to keep it even.

5. The base doesn’t hold its shape or seems too tight for the insert?
👉 Tip: When folding the sides in Step 9 and 10, leave a little breathing room in the pocket area.
Press creases well, but don’t fold too tightly—this helps the top part slide in smoothly.

6. Egg looks flat or messy at the edges?
👉 Tip: Run your fingernail or a ruler along each fold to sharpen the creases.
Clean folds make all the difference in shaping the egg neatly, especially near the corners in Step 10.
